Bycatch in crustacean bottom-trawlers

24 de May, 2021 Delasmop

One of the activities of the DELASMOP project is to characterize and identify deep-sea sharks and rays, which are commonly caught as by-catch in crustacean bottom-trawlers, as is the case of these two species in the photo ‘Centroscymnus crepidater’ and ‘Deania calcea’, commonly known as longnose velvet dogfish and birdbeak dogfish respectively.

This allows us to relate the incidence of each species to fishing zones, environmental data and operational fishing procedures in the South of Portugal
